Warm-ups

Here are some fun, interactive warm-up activities designed for a one-on-one online classroom:

Two Truths and a Lie

​

Activity: Both the teacher and the student share three statements about themselves, two of which are true and one is a lie. The other person has to guess which statement is the lie.

Purpose: Encourages speaking and listening skills while building rapport.

​

Would You Rather

 

Activity: Present the student with a series of "Would you rather..." questions that require them to choose between two options and explain their choice.

Purpose: Stimulates conversation and critical thinking.

​

​

Quick Draw

​

Activity: Using an online drawing tool, both participants draw simple pictures related to a specific topic (e.g., animals, food). The other person guesses what each drawing represents.

Purpose: Promotes creativity and vocabulary related to the topic.

Show and Tell

​

Activity: The student brings an object from their home and talks about it. The teacher can ask follow-up questions to encourage more detail.

Purpose: Builds descriptive language and personal connection.

Find Something That

​

Activity: The teacher gives the student a list of things to find in their home (e.g., something red, something that makes noise). The student finds these items and explains their choices.

Word Association

​

Activity: The teacher says a word, and the student responds with the first word that comes to mind. Continue back and forth, creating a chain of associated words.

Virtual Scavenger Hunt

​

Activity: Create a list of items or themes for the student to find in their environment or online. They describe or show what they found.

Purpose: Encourages exploration and descriptive language.

Memory Game

​

Activity: Show the student a series of pictures or words for a short time. Remove the images and ask them to recall and describe what they saw.

Purpose: Improves memory and descriptive skills.

​

 

Story Starters

​

Activity: Provide the student with the beginning of a story and ask them to continue it. Take turns adding to the story to create a collaborative narrative.

Purpose: Stimulates imagination and storytelling skills.

Name 5 Things

​

Activity: Ask the student to name five things within a category (e.g., five fruits, five countries). Encourage them to explain their choices or share additional information about each item.

Emoji Sentences

​

Activity: Use emojis to represent different words or ideas. Have the student create sentences or short stories based on the emojis provided.

Daily News

​

Activity: Ask the student to share a news story or interesting fact they recently heard. Discuss the story, asking questions to encourage deeper understanding.

Purpose: Develops summarizing skills and current events awareness.

Tongue Twisters

​

Activity: Challenge the student with fun tongue twisters. Both practice saying them clearly and quickly.

Backwards Day

​

Activity: Ask the student to say or spell words backwards. This can be a fun challenge that encourages careful listening and thinking.

Describe and Draw

​
